removing canister filter

I just added a sump to my 75 gallon and want to remove the canister filter that has been on the system since the previous owner had the tank.

I am going to build or buy a couple phosban reactors for my carbon, nitrate sponge, and phosphate sponge.

There is a tray at the bottom of the canister that has some media in it, and I don't know what it is. It is small circular media that I assume is in there to promote bacterial denitrification.

What should I do with this media? Remove it, put it in its own reactor, etc...?
