Removing plastic frame off tank?

Anybody every removed the plastic frame off a tank. I have a old tank I want to convert into a sump and need to take few inches off the tank so that I will fit into under my tank. Thought that I could use either a glass cutter or rotozip.

what i did is i just pullet it off. the places where it wouldnt come off i uses a blade to cut of soem silicon.

i always thought that if you took the plastic off of a tank it could seperate easily where the peices of glass are siliconed together.

No, as long as there is a good silicone job on there... the silicone will hold! The plastic frame is mainly for when you set it down, and you have an uneven surface... the fram compensates for that! Then you won't have to worry about the glass breaking when you have it full of water.

If the plastic frame has a brace in it, you need to keep the frame. What you could do is take it off, cut 2" off the top of the tank, then reapply the frame.

There has been way too many threads about broken glass from people who removed just the brace.

its a pain in the a$$ i've done it on many of tanks and it sucks everytime. glasscages.com does sell replacement tops n bottoms incase u break it takin it off. Good Luck!

I had tried removing the frame a few minutes ago. No luck.

I thought about just cutting the tank down and then removing the frame and sticking it back on. Sounds somewhat risky as well.

Would it be best to use glass cutter or dremel, if I was to do the above?

I'd use something designed for cutting glass (I know it sounds dumb, but some people probably don't). A good diamond-coated Dremel bit would work well, but it would be hard to get a straight cut on a tank.

If you could get a hold of a nice glass-cutting circular saw blade and a hose, I bet you could cut it up in no time.
