Removing soft coral from LR

I am in the transition from softies to SPS. I need to remove a rather large soft coral from LR. The LFS guy told me to cut it at base then stab a wood skewer thru it and rubber band it to a piece of rubble. This all sounded very grisly and I don't want to kill the coral just rehome it. So I'm looking for any tips or experience on how to remove it. As a side note if there is anyone near Lafayette LA that wants some corals please let me know.

Can you just rehome the rock? That's your easist out. He is right about how to frag it. The thing is most will grow back if not removed from the rock. I'm talking about the foot you cut above. Watch some videos on fragging soft corals. Then get some things to do it and learn. Its actually very rewarding. Remember if a huge storm comes through in nature these things get ripped apart. That's why 90% of corals can be chopped up and glued back down.

Removing soft coral from LR

I wish removing the rock or chipping it was an option. It was a tiny frag when it started but is connected to my largest piece of LR.

It's the green softie I am looking at removing.
I will look at the videos. I trusted the guy at the LFS and he told me same thing about he base. Just looking for more help, experience or tips. Thank you.

thats a beautiful coral. I would add a few sps slowly and keep it there. the thing is sps have a learning curve. for most they have issues first time. so if you removed it, buy 3 sps frags and the 3 die your awesome leather is gone.

just work around it imo, because yes removing the rock does not seem viable.

Yeah maybe I will just ease into it. I was concerned about them attacking each other. I did get my first SPS a turquoise staghorn. We shall see how it goes.

i rarely worry about the battles between softies and sps. its lps and other sps that concern me. hope that helps, of course there is lots of reading up for sps. Thats one thing BRS has not covered yet is compatibility. I would watch there video on SPS and then read some forums and research on them. Not all corals get along but some do, its learning what works. I have seen plenty of softies by sps and had them myself. I have not seen many torch LPS by sps though.

If you still wanted to remove it, chopping it at the base and then putting epoxy over what remains on the rock should do the trick

Ok thank you! I am still experimenting with my first staghorn. We will see how it goes. I'm glad I have the option to remove them if I choose.
