Most nano-reefers don't use mechanical filters at all. I can tell you from one of my cichlid tanks that they're pretty good... not as good as an Eheim but nothing to sneeze at, though priming them is a nightmare.
The trick to using mechanical filters in a reef is that you have to clean the sponges weekly(ish) and shouldn't run any biological media to avoid nitrate buildup.
I'd skip the cannister in a reef tank, just not worth using as such... if you want to use it as a water pump, that's an ok proposition.
