hey guys Mel was nice enough to give me some rock, that and the rock i have now is enough to finish off my display, but it will have to be de phospated.....if thats even a word lol....it is dead and clean other then that, i just want to make sure i dont get any phospate leaching out so i was gonna have it soak in ro di water for a few weeks, however after that im not too sure what to do...should i take the time to cure that rock and then replace the rock in my tank with that or could i maybe get away with taking my current rock out and just placing that dead rock in? my current rock in the tank should be cooked.....has too much hair algae for my liking, even though some pices dont look too bad.....my worry here is if i take out my present rock to just put in that dead rock i might disturb my bio-filter too much....any thoughts on this?

That rock from Mel needs to be Cooked after it has been soaked in acid to remove the Phosphate it has accumulated over the years it sat in trash cans. I think it is Muriatic acid but not sure but without doing this step if you think you have hair algae now Lookout! Do some research on bringing rock loaded with Po4 back to a usable state before you cause yourself more grief than you know what to do about.
Why do you think Mel did not use that rock? I'm sure he told you the same thing I'm telling you now. It can be done but not by simply soaking it in plain RODI water.

yea Mel told me a little, but i don't mind doing all that as long as i dont need to waste salt on it, i'll try looking that up....thanks Bill

ive read a bit and seen that some dont think Muriatic acid does any good and they rather just go about actually cooking it the normal way

OK, Here's the deal we both have gave you our opinion on that rock now you have to decide what works for you. I will not be responsible for your decisions as to how to treat it, Just give you the facts it's full of Po4 and in it's current state will be a problem just like you have now.

tad grumpy there huh Bill lol i simply stated something a good few seem to say about that stuff...i still plan on using it....my question still stands as too how much rock is lost after using the acid?

thanks Lin, i was thinking it wouldnt but wasnt too sure....hate to open up a tote and see the rocks lose their cool shapes

Mario, I was not Grumpy I just want to be very clear as what the problem with that rock is because when you have a worse problem than you do now you will look at the people that gave you advice as to how to solve that problem and lets be honest there will be but he said, This ,That and the other thing and now it's worse. Well i don't want to be that one that get any blame. Very Clear, If you take it as Grumpy I'm Sorry.

yea... mario.. that rock saturated my 240 with off the chart po4 in one day... nothing else in there but that rock... i used 2k ml of phosguard... and didnt make a dent... numbers were still off the chart after a week.... it really needs to be cooked... if ya want ... i think "marco rock" had the directions for what they do on their website... and their stuf is po4 free... i would suggest doing something of the sort... but on a smaller scale ofcourse... i think they use muriatic (sp?) acid... ;)
