Replacing two pumps with one

currently running a Mag 5 for the skimmer and a Mag 7 on the return, I'm thinking about replacing the two pumps with a single bigger pump.

Any suggestions ?

Not a good idea. The skimmer should be in the first section of your sump not the return.

Yes. Your skimmer should be fed raw overflow water to maximize skimate production. If your overflow water has to underflow to get to your skimmer, the surface active proteins will tend to not underflow since that would entail leaving the surface. Anthony Calfo has a very thorough thread about it here.
