Replenishing a DSB.

Anthony,

Parts of my 2yr old 5" DSB have either moved or disolved. The part of the sand bed in front of my LR has areas that are as low as 3.5" . Most of the reduction in this area was caused by the Tunze Stream 6060 which was added last summer. But, I cannot figure out where it has all moved to. Most of the bed is appx 5" . I imagine some of it is in the sump/fuge and some of it went into the skimmer. Anyway, I've adjusted the Tunze so that it is slightly angled up instead of down. Anyway, I need to add more sand in the areas that are < 5". So, at what rate should I add the new sand? I want to give the fauna a chance to migrate up into the new sand.

I know you were asking Anthony. But my suggestion is just to add the new sand in the places where you want to fill some holes and then lightly stir in the top 1/2" of the old sand with the new sand. This will give your organisms a 'jump start' on colonizing the new sand. The new sand really shouldn't effect your levels. I added 40lbs of sand to my 90 gal a while ago and saw no noticible change in chemistry or animal activity.
