i caught a mantis shrimp today he is about 2 " and reddish, right now i have him in a 1 gallon gold fish bowl with 2 live rocks and some live sand from the package a airstone because i wasnt ready but can i keep him in a 5 gallon or something with live rock and sand and just do frequent water changes?

i just couldnt flush him:D

I have 2 adults I collected from my 2nd shipment. I put them in a standard 10 gallon tank with some sand, a few pieces of live rock, some plastic plants and few 4" pieces of 1/2 inch PVC pipe.

They are thriving and share the tank with some gorrilla crabs and a pair of electric blue damsels. I use a hang on filter, heater, and a full hood with a flourescent grow light bulb.

Once a week I drain most of the water out and replace it with
water from my main tank which is right next to it.

I have some sponges starting to grow on the rock, and a bunch of tiny fan worms poking out of the rock.

Everything seems to be doing well with this system although the crabs tend to always look a little nervous.

I had one in a 1 gallon tupperware for about 2 months with just water and a couple of rocks. I was trying to torture it cause he killed my bi-color blenie but it trived (no air or circulation). I ended up tossing it in the intercoastal.

yeah i ended up picking up a 2.5 gallon today putting extra sand and rock in it a 15watt bulb hood and a airstone across the whole rear wall of the tank for circulation. i put a piece of shrimp in there for him figuring he wouldnt eat because i just moved him to the tank, he dived at it so fast i didnt see it happen until he already was eating it. would it have killed a live fish that quick?

If the fish got near his hole (mine actually went inside)... yes. Next time you're at your LFS, pick up a LIVE ghost shrimp (99cents) stick it in that tank and try to keep your eyes on the shrimp. Expect a loud pop and a dieing shrimp flying acros the tank.

I now have four of them living in a 10 gallon macroalgae filter. Thet have all staked out there claims to the various pieces of liverock. I have never had to feed them. The water is pumped into the tank from an overflow and it seems to contain all of the goodies they need!

i caught a 2.5" one and threw it in there with him today they boxed for about 30 seconds and then went to there seperate corners,
im about positive there is only 1 more in the display tank and he is only 1" long and ill get him when he is off guars until then i think the fish will be safe
