I have a 55g tank and was wondering if i could get a clam with the lighting i have. the lighting has 2 65 watt, 10,000k and 2 65 watt True Actinic 03 Blue straight pin base compact fluorescent lamps

before you go and buy a clam, do some reading. there's great info here on RC and on the clamsdirect forum. you will find that its not an easy task. read, read more, and soak up as much info as you can. if you are ready then let us know :)
here are some tips to get you started:

Stable alkalinity (8-11 dkh)
Stable calcium (390-440)
Stable water parameters
Sufficient lighting (at least 150 watt 14k metal halides no more than 20 inches depth DIRECTLY under the bulb)

Yup. Reading and researching is best before you get your clam. I was first planning on getting a PC 2x65w fixture, but after reading the forums and other sites for a few days I decided to get a Sunpod 150w MH fixture.

Check some of the other posts here as well. Many are regarding this exact topic. The overwhelming concensus is that PC light wont sustain clams, although there are a few people here who claim success. My vote is no- you will likely kill the clam.

Would 175's be sufficient for clams? I will also have 4 140 watt VHO's probably 2 super actinic and two actinic white. I don't want more than 2-3 clams, but I would like to keep on the bottome of the tank if possible. The tank is 48x24x24 and the bulbs are iwaski 14k's.

you should be fine with most clams, Croceas and Maximas would do much better closer to the light though

For you first clam I would get a deresa. Your lighting is more than adequate.

Yes i bought a couple of clams with regular reef lighting. didnt know about needing halides. Was wondern y clams didnt look like the stores so had water tested. Fine. Then was told about needing halides. Also they are expensive. Can u get better deals online? I have 46g.

just ordered a 2 250watt metal halide fixture for my 75 am i good for clams on the bottom. I would like to keep as many kinds as i can afford.

See this thread, many people have kept clams with PC lighting. I remember reading Melev also had a maxima under PC. There are a number of peps in this forum who don't believe in PC, but my bud from school has had a dereasa in his tank for over a year. Cie la vie

There will always be people who will proclaim their success with clams under PC. But how many fail? These people do not post. I am speculating WILDLY, but I would guess for every one succes, there is AT LEAST 10 failures that we never hear about.

Here is the biology of the matter. Clams need strong light to survive. PC lights do not generate strong light. I strongly advise against anyone keeping any clams with PC lights. There is a very strong likelihood they will fail.
