response from the LFS

I told the guy at my LFS that I was thinking about starting up a mantis tank. His response was " why in the h*** would you want a mantis shrimp. I have to say I was offended, they are beautiful. Has anyone else recieved that response from someone when you tell them you keep mantis shrimps?

Generally, you are probably dealing with ignorant individuals that have been conditioned to believe that a "mantis" is an evil, malicious creature hell bent on destructing all living creatures in their domain. In reality, they don't always attack everything, and only start decimating your livestock if you don't feed them enough or stock the tank properly.... My LFS first thought I was crazy too, but now they are thinking about getting one for their nano-reef display!

When i picked up my G. Platysoma, the girl said " You do know these things are dangerous, kill fish, cut off fingers, and break fish tanks dont you?" To which my response was "If you can tell me exactly what kind it is, i will heed your warning..........dont know...............Its a G. Platysoma................dont give me false information...........can you get me your manager please." Just last night, i was watching my Lawnmower Blenny chase my G. Smithii around the tank.

Thats hilarious! I wasnt sure if blenny's would be safe with mantid's...thats good to know!

My blenny is a bit of a crack head. He moves up and down and back and forth across the tank all day long. The mantis was out because i had to cut his tube in half for the platy in the sump. Somehow he found his way to the front of the tank was ambushed by the blenny doing mach 1 across the sand. He didnt turn and attack, he just ran!

When I was looking for my mantis one store said "Sorry we kill those things, you wouldnt want one"

When I told him I wanted to keep a mantis, he said "your going to need at least a 500 gallon tank for it" - He thought I was talking about a manta ray (sp?). :lol:

I said a mantis SHRIMP - that is when the ignorant comment flew out of his mouth.

A ghost shrimp that was a fifth his size. This mantis would tackle fiddler crabs near his own size, and he ran from a ghost shrimp...

I asked if they ever get any mantis in and the dude said, " no we would have to be stupid...they will break all our tanks" ....and thats now the reason why i cant get one...because my mom thinks the guy is right and i am wrong...she trusts some idiot at this stupid petstore more then she trusts me.
