restricted pump cause heat?

when my pumped failed last month I took the big plunge and changed my wet dry filter to a 20 gal sump to get rid of the bioballs and make more room for a larger skimmer in the future I added a mag 7 on my 58 well the overflow was gurgeling so I cut down the pump with a ball valve and fixed that problem I don't know how hot the tank was running before but the stick on therm. says around 84 I was wondering if cuting down a pump adds heat or if its just the mag 7 runs hotter than the old pump and I have no idea what the old pump was it may be chiller time :(

What was the old pump? Mags can run pretty hot. If I remember correctly a Mag 9 can add like 5 degrees to a 90 gallon. The hotter weather could be contributing as well. Mag pumps don't run hotter constricted vs. non that I know of.

Chris it was some no name pump I know the house is hotter now by about 6 degrees than in winter and I figured it was the pump + the house was hotter contributing I just didn't know about the restricting return I may get a smaller pump for the return and see if it helps any preferance guessing 300gpm at 4 foot

External is usually better unless it is a quieter pump and doesn't have a cooling fan. Most are too big for your tanks return anyway (you might look at the smaller Pan world? (blueline) pumps). You could probably get away with a smaller Mag, say a 5 or so. I like Eheims. They are on the expensive side but will last 10 years. You should be able to do what you want with around 50 watts or so if I remember correctly but I haven't looked at pumps in 3 years to be honest. I know the Oceanrunner pumps were popular for a while and well priced. Maybe Randy will chime in. He's probably up to date on all that stuff:)

I just put in a Catalina CA-4000 (I think). It pushed too much flow so I cut down the impeller. Now the wattage is down and the flow is just right. Plus, for $40 shipped on ebay, you can't beat the price. Looks to be reasonably well constructed, too.
