Resumpium...

Im changing pace a little and getting a 210 setup. I have built a sump before, but figured with this tank why not go with a fugie.

I have a 55 gallon that will be setup with a skimmer, two MaxiJet 3000 (one per side)

So i just decided to build my resumpium. all of all. I had to failures at first with water flow, but wanted some opinions on this layout.

From right to left:

Chamber 1 (17"): Drain from tank / Vertex 180
Chamber 2 (6") : Three stealth heaters
Chamber 3/4: Bubble Trap 3 Baffles 1" Apart
Chamber 5 (12"): Sand, Critter
Chamber 6 (10"): Two return Maxi Jets

I still have to play with some water flow to see how high my baffles will be, but have a rough idea.

Attached is a rough picture. Thoughts?

Standard layout. Two comments:

1.) If you have room, a settling chamber (area) before the PS would help remove large particles from water column. I'd use your heater area and push the PS towards the return to make this happen. Heaters can be put anywhere.

2.) don't forget a titanium probe to remove stray voltage.

The flow will have to be fairly slow to keep the sand and refugium from being too turbulent, since all your flow has to go through it.
Your return section will probably be 10-15 gallons depending on the baffle height. I like a larger return to handle evaporation, unless you are using an ATO.
You could switch it around, put the refugium far left, the skimmer far right, and the return to the tank in the center.
Split the overflow piping from the tank, some to the 'fuge, some to the skimmer. Use valves so you can adjust the flow through each.

Check, and check.

I was looking at melevs and he has a corner box that the water drains down in and i was thinking of that. I might just push everything over and just keep it a normal setup.

Thanks

one last thought. 55's are pretty tall. Sure you have room under your tank to reach over the 55 and get into the sump?

Yeah with the stand I purchased i have just enough room to get in there. There is about 11" from the top of the 55 to work with. I had to test to make sure i had clearance to remove the collection cup from the skimmer.

My last 180 build i had that issue. I ended up with about 4 " of room.

A way to solve the flow problem is to actually put the fuge where chamber 6 is, and run it off a very slow powerhead. Might create microbubble problems though, depending on flow, etc.

How about putting the skimmer in the first large area then use the outflow from the skimmer to create the flow in the refugium section last larger area. This way you don't have to add the power/heat/micro bubbles from another power head. Also you may want to "skim" before the refugium - many opinions vary on this. Jsut throwing out options.

The skimmer is in the first area where the tank drain is. It flows right to left.

I am working on just moving everything over 1 to put the fuge on the left.
