Return Pump / Chiller / Flow rate

Hi All,

I am setting up a 48"x24"x18" mixed reef (340 litre / 90 gal), and plan to have heavy stocking.

1. What is the current thinking on sump turnover rates?
The skimmer I'm plannign to use has a water turnover of 2,000 litres / hour. So I think a 20-25% increase on that should suffice i.e. a turnover rate of about 7-8 times per hour.

2. Is it a good idea to run the chiller in-line on the return pump line?

I'm looking at two chiller options. Not sure yet, I'll take the advice of the supplier in terms of rating.
  • The smaller chiller size requires 200-1200 liters/hr. That would allow a turnover rate of 0.6-3.5 per hour.
  • The bigger chiller size requires 1000-2500 liters/hr. That would allow a turnover rate of 3.0 - 7.3 per hour.

So I am thinking if I use the smaller chiller then I should have a bypass on the return line (although its difficult to monitor the flow rate of that).

If I go with the bigger chiller, I could just run it in line at full bore.

So, in conclusion - if I opt for the smaller chiller, would it just be easier to have a separate feed pump? I am sure that will be cheaper both in terms of initial cost and running cost.

Thoughts please?
