Return pump for 40b

I would consider an Eheim 1260 if you want a fair amount of flow through your sump (it would also allow you to use the return pump to supply any reactors like GFO or Carbon that you may want to add), or the Eheim 1250 if you just want around 200 GPH through the sump. Some of the new DC pumps may give you lower power usage, but for long term reliability with low noise and good power consumption the Eheim pumps are tried and true.

I have a 1.5" drain on mine and my mag 9.5 is just a smudge higher than I'd like it running 100%. I think a mag 7 would be perfect if you have a decent sized drain

+1 I have an eheim 1250 and love it. I had a mag 7 for a week but it was too loud for my taste so I bought the eheim and it's very quiet with great flow. I have a 40 breeder too btw.

I'm running a Mag 7 and it's perfect for my 40b. It was a tad noisy at first but that went away after about a week. If you take it apart there was a casting issue with the impeller with extra piece of material on it. Just sand it off and all quiet. Or just let it wear off while it runs. These are great pumps

I run a Mag 9.5 on my 40b, but I have it teed off with a ball valve for fine tuning. It's teed back into the return portion of the sump so their is never any restriction on the pump motor. With about 5 ft. of head loss, I think it's perfect for my set-up, but it would probably be overkill if not teed back into the return.

Have a Mag 9.5 on my 40b, got it back in 2007 but has been in storage for several years but is a decent pump. Mine is running the return and Teed to the refugium and phos reactor. I do have it throttled back 1/4 turn. Also have a mouse pad under it for vibration control.

Mine does run slightly warm but that could be from the throttling back - as long as I have it totally submerged its kept cool. I've not noticed any increase in the tank temps so it can't be too much of a problem.

Good pump for the price.

I can't believe that with all these suggestions, no one has asked the important questions.
What size sump? Do you have a skimmer? What size?
With a sump you should have the return pump flow rate matched to skimmer flow rates in order to ensure better filtration contact time. You don't want the nasties from your display rushing past the skimmer without giving your skimmer a chance to do it's job. Also, one of the nice things about a sump is that, if set up correctly, a lot of the nasties that make it past the skimmer will actually settle in the sump and be easier to remove. With too much flow through the sump, it'll be like a whirlpool and nothing will settle. Of coarse running a filter sock or similar mechanical filtration helps with this.
A good rule (not set in stone) is 5-10 times turn over volume for the sump.

On a 40, the mag 7 will be plenty of flow. The mag pumps are very reliable. I've had better luck with them than with eheim pumps. I had a mag 24 pump that was able to push 14ft head in 1.5" pvc pipe, and flowed so much that I had to put a valve inline to throttle it back. Mag pumps are also a lot cheaper than eheim.
