I need to get both of these to get my sump going in my 55 gallon. I just don't know what's good and bad because it seems like there's so many brands out there. I was going to buy them both on ebay, can you guys tell me what's good and bad and how much flow rate will I need for both of these??? In particular, which ones are crap on ebay, it seems like some are pretty cheap...

Thanks!

Hi,
I have a 55 gal and I am using a mag 9.5 for my return pump.
As far as overflow boxs go I do not know what brand is good. Mine came with the tank. You will need one that can handle at least 600 gph though. Hope this helps you.

How is the mag 9.5 when it comes to the water flow inside the display tank? I was thinking about going wiht a mag 7 for mine...

go with a lower flow return pump and leave the tank circulation for seio's or a closed loop. as for the overflow i would just drill your own, or have your local glass co. do it.

drilling glass is not that hard at all, but if your tank is already set up then a external overflow would be best. i would go with either a lifereef or amiracle overflow. they seem to be the best. i would go with a mag 5 or even mag 3 for your return. for a little more $$ an eheim 1250 or 1260 would be even better for an in sump return pump.

You will still probably need another powerhead in the tank. You will only get one direction of flow if you only have one return pump. I always used rio's for my return pump. With rio's if you get a good one, they last a long time. If it's a bad one, you'll know quickly because they won't last long. Had a rio 2100 for 4 years with no problems. Then 2 2500's that lasted 2 months each.
