Return Pump Placement

I'm using a Quietone 4000 for my return pump from the sump on my 75gal tank. I was wondering is it possible to place the pump above the sump (less than a foot) with plumbing in sump (sump isn't drilled on the sides top only). If so will i be able to prime it without problems since it is not self priming.

Good question. Can you do this yes, do you really want to no.

Yes you can mount the pump above the sump, and set it up so you can prime it. The problem is any time the pump stops you will have to reprime the pump. There is no easy way to setup the system so the pump will not lose prime unless the pump is mounted below the water level in the sump.

Kim is right. Power outages or just basic tank maintanence force the pump to be turned off and then back on. It would be difficult if not impossible to reprime the pump everytime this occurs.

Secondly magnetic centrifugal pumps will cavitate (shake and cause bubbles) if the input pressure is too low. Raising the pump a foot will significantly reduce input pressure. There is a good chance that this arraingment would cause cavitation. Check the manual (or look it up online) for directions on input plumbing for this pump.
