Return pump suggestions?

It's not clear if your looking for a flow pump or return pump from the sump. That pump wouldn't be adequate as a return at that volume IMO.

...but I don't know if it's too much flow:

Changing my answer to a firm no, it won't do.

I did find a flow curve that included the 5000 and up version of this pump. The 5000 puts out a theoretical 500 gallons an hour @ six feet. I'd suggest that pump at a minimum.

That pump will be just fine for a return pump. Its a dc pump so you can adjust the flow to get 200gph or so which is plenty for a 40b.
They are really quiet too.

Didn't expect even that much flow. Good to know.

OP, disregard my hard no. I defer to Mcgyvr's judgment.

Thank you!
I only need 200 gph? I thought I needed ~600 for the tank from what I've read on forums.

3-5x display tank size for the return pump is plenty.. So 3x40 =120 to 5x40=200gph..
Some go by 10x rule of thumb so 400gph..

Now flow from powerheads to usually 30x or more
