Return Pumps

Hey i am trying to decide on a return pump from my fuge to display. I will be running a cpr overflow box rated for 600gph. Head height is not a huge factor, there will be a head height of about 3.5ft. What brands or individual pumps do you guys recommend for my application.

A Mag 7 would work fine for that

The head height would be enough to decrease the gph outputed by the mag 7 to under 600 gph?

Internal or external. If internal I would look at the OceanRunner 2500. Its very energy efficient, quiet, dependable and about half the cost of a comparable Eheim which would be my second choice. Mag does not even make the list due to high heat generation, noisey and high energy usage compared to others in its class. When installing a return pump put a ball or gate valve on the discharge side so you can slow the flow a little if necessary. It does not hurt the pump in any way and in most cases makes them more efficient so thye use less power and create less heat due to the additional head reducing the flow thus the amount of work the pump is required to perform.

I just got an OceanRunner 2500 for the return on my 90g tank, and I'm really happy with how quiet it is. If going external, I'd recommend a Panworld. But, if you have a choice, pick a submerged pump as they're significantly quieter than the best external pumps.
