Return water flow

How do u know where to set the water flow? I know what flow I want but I have no idea what flow I'm getting because of piping and head loss so how do u know how much to dial the pump back? What should I be looking for as far as power coming out of the return?

What I did was put a valve on the pump and one on the drain. I kept both open to see what one was stronger, then closed the drain to match the pump. I did this because my overflow sounds like a toilet if its kept wide open.

LOL

I hope that doesn't happen to me

I would get a pump that you know is too strong, and then use a valve to throttle it back to the level you want. Your rates will change after you haven't cleaned it for a while, and then again after toy change it. You'll want the ability to adjust.

Also, mine sounds like a toilet too. I put some air tubing down the drain, and when you get it to just the right spot, it's silent ☺

Matching a pump exactly to your return is going to be pretty much impossible... The length of hose, the valves, whether you have any curves in the line, this all effects the flow rate. Just go a little stronger than you need and use a valve to throttle it back. I use a ball valve, but if I could do it again. I'd use a gate valve.

You're good. You make that call by hooking it all up, and adjusting your flow rate with the valve until the water level is just below the teeth on the inside of the overflow. I keep mine 1-2" below the teeth.

You said your overflow drain is faster then your return pipe right then open it all the way and make your overflow drain pipes taller so your lvl rises in the overflow box so the noise goes down and put a cap and drill air whole in it of you can take a picture of your overflow pipes
