Returns and overflow positions

What is the best way to pipe back the return lines and the overflow for the main display tank. I have a 55 gallon tank (4ft long). This is going to be for a reef tank with fish (soft corals).

Should I have:

Option 1: Two overflows on each corner and a return in the middle

Option 2: Two returns on each corner and a overflow in the middle

Are there any other options?

It's a toss up. I would personally go with one overflow with 1" piping for a 600gph result, then 2 -3/4 returns, 1 on each end.

Then I would make up the balance of the flow requirements with a couple maxi-jet 1200's. You could use tunze or seio's also. Depends on the budget.

Others here will have different ideas, but IMO, this would work good for a 55g.

To return to the display, there are also a variety of options. Depending on the distance from the pump to the bulhead, either a magdirve 9.5 or magdrive 12 would work. You will want to install a union and a ballvalve between the pump and the bulkhead so you can clean and service the pump. Also will allow you to reduce flow from the return to match the drain gph from the overflow. Of course there are a variety of other pump brands you could use.

Hope this helps.
