I have a box of sand living outside for quite sometime. It used to be live sand, but now is cover with black outside the box. I rinsed it couple times but still have black large grain size one. It is ok to reuse it ? of course let it recycle my new tank .

i'd just replace it. If it's been outside, you probably had some rain water enter the box.

Even if cycled, your sand could leech out some unwanted chemicals (if left in the rain).

Just mix the sand w/ your garden and pick up some bags of sand. If your adding this to an established system, your old sand will seed the newer sand. If using in a new system, add some sand from an established system to help seed.

Good luck.

It been outside in Competely Seal plastic box with saltwater in it too. No rainfall in there. but anyway . try to do it right in setting up . I will dispose the sand . thanks.

don't want to get many thread . I am in need of clean sand . Anyone have some for sale. please let me know. don't need to be live sand. thanks in advance.

I reused dead sand all the time and have never had any problem or even a real cycle. I rinse it 7-8 times with tap water or until the water comes out clear then seed it with a bit of live sand from an establish tank.
