Reusing water change water??

Evaporate the liquid and sell the residue on eBay as organic gourmet sea salt.

$40 a week for salt isn't really cheap for a business that isn't making a profit. They are still building the store(in their home) and have been paying for salt and electricity out of their own pockets for quite awhile now. The costs are obviously growing as they add systems. Thanks for your opinion though, it is good to know.

I was just trying to help them to save some money. I know that with this hobby there are lots of different ways to do things and be successful. I have been telling them for awhile though that they need better skimmers on a couple of their systems. That should help with the water changes some.

I fully understand your desire to help... but taking a step back, these are all things (the costs) that they should have built into their business plan and accounted for when determining budgets and needed capital to open a business.... If they did not know about the costs, then they did not do their homework.

I am not trying to beat anybody up and in reality my comments are meant for anybody who is thinking about starting a business in general. It takes a good business plan and a lot of homework. Of course a few who have no plan and do no homework get lucky once in a while.

As for the reuse of water... the Pittsburgh Zoo does filter and reuse a significant portion of their water. I can not remember the details off the top of my head. They also do water changes with NEW water on a schedule as well.

For an LFS sized system I just do not see it being cost effective in any form. Better primary filtration will be much more efficient.

When you setup shop in your garage to beat the prices of your local fish store you see why they sell fish at the price they do. Not only do the LFS have extra things like: overhead, maintenance, losses and more, but need to make a living also. Great idea to setup a store, but not out of your house not enough traffic to support your hobby/business. If you have enough traffic the acclimation and bagging alone came make up for water changes.

My suggestion to him, is to sell more stuff and do less water direct water changes. Every time he sales something he will be doing a water change, so if he is very busy there will be no need for direct water changes just as seacreatures says.

I use to own Aquatech here in Indiana and I never did a water change. This is why. Every time I got new livestock in it was acclumated wich lowers the water level it was filled up with new saltwater. when a bag went out that was that much new saltwater that was added to the system. so all the time it was getting a water change.
