Ribbon eel changing colour

Hi all

I have heard of ribbon eels changing colour normally black to blue or blue to yellow/greenish
As they mature, change sex.

However I have never heard of one going from blue back to black. Well this is what mine has done.
It was a very nice metallic blue colour and now it's almost completely black changes has taken place over a few months.

He the only ribbon in the tank but I also have a zebra plus a bunch of fish. he healthy and happy eats fine.

Any ideas as why the change to black? No longer wanting to be dominant male?

Are there potential threats? Is it possible it's turning black as a means of camouflaging itself better?

no real threats.overall he's a happy eel.
