i have a nice orange ricordea.it's attached rock fell off the rock wall and was face down in the sand with the rock on top of it for over 12 hours. now over 80% of it is damaged with color lost and has a slim coat covering it, My question is how long should i leave it alone or should I cut the damaged area out. I know cutting it will be ok for the undamaged area, but will it kill the damaged area.Or does the healthy area help the damaged area?

If the damaged area isn't "melting," leave it alone and it should heal in a week or so, damaged area included. This is dependent if you keep all the other parameters in check too :)

You'll literally see parts of it dissolve into a slime and come off the shroom itself. The parts that are melting will look very mushy as well. This is different than if you see it expel stuff from the center of its mouth. It does that when it is stressed pretty bad as well.

Other than that, I think your shroom will be okay. They are pretty tough animals.

so if part of it does start to melt badly and not start to heal it 5-6 days, then cut the roughen part out.

If it starts to melt away, if you can move it to a hospital tank to avoid polluting your tank. If one is not available, I would just siphon away the melting part and slime and wait and hope. Cutting it may only stress it further. But to be honest, I never cut away any sick shroom and merely siphoned away (no hospital tank either :lmao:) the melting part and they have recovered.

brown jelly infection, one of my prized ricordia pieces was killed from it. I have read that main causes are bacteria from the sand, so it would make sense that yours showed it after falling into the sand. I mount my ricordias on rocks now, and havent seen the jelly infection since then. If you have other ricordias, be careful the infection doesnt spread to them.

peter t,
will the damage area dead off, the remaining 15% is ok. I see what you mean about melting away.
thanks again
