ricordia death

Why are ricordias melting? There are similar questions in this forum, but so far no definitive answers. In my case I've had 5 ricordias (individual and colonies) growing for over a year. They really looked good. Encouraged by this I ordered 6 new ones from the same on line source with over night shipping. On arrival they all appeared a little shrunken, as expected. After acclimation they were placed in the tank and looked OK (for new arrivals) for a few days (longer than the guarantee) but then began to shrink and melt. Of the 6 new ones only 2 now remain, and they look fine. However, 2 of my long established colonies completely melted and disappered almost over night at the same time as the new ones. The remaining 3 established colonies look unchanged. I don't get it, do you?

I'm assuming that you are talking about yumas. Yumas do that for no apparent reasons. I had two reds and one pink completely dissappear in a day without a trace. All parameters were fine.

I was going to say the same thing. I too have trouble with yumas at times, but Mildew, you mention not all were yumas. Are you sure on that, maybe thought the others that melted were FL and not yuma?
That would be very odd and a puzzle for sure. Usually FL can withstand anything from being taken out of the water for long periods to intense lighting. Yumas on the other hand can be very touchy about water quality, lighting, water flow and handleing.

Here is what happened to me. I had a nice Fla Ricordea "garden". I had some lime green and some teal mixed together on a large piece of LR that was kind of bowl shaped. They all overlapped and looked really cool. People that came over would always comment on them and ignore my nice Blastos and Lords. Anyway one of the Fla Rics came in contact with a Blasto Wellsi. It started to melt and sluff off goo. No big deal I thought to lose 1 polyp. Then over the period of about 3 days the same thing happened to all 10 half dollar sized polyps. They are all gone now. Corals within 3-4 inches were not affected at all including some other Rics. I have to believe that whatever caused the first stung Ric to die was able to spread to the others that were right next to or touching it.

I thought this was a FL ricordia and not a yuma. The established ricordias that melted were of this type but were a different color. I have to admit my ignorance or lack of experience as to how this ricordia is different from a yuma. As for the occurrence of similar experiences, what could be the causal factor?
