Rimless Aquariums and Wrasses........

or other fish that are known to jump. I'm curious if those with rimless or open top aquariums keep wrasses or gobies, or if they have probs with fish jumping out. I love the look of rimless tanks but I've had a foxface jump out of my open QT tank so it's created a concern.

I'm planning to upgrade my 90g to a 180g and would like some feedback from those that have open top aquariums.

put a fence around the perimeter? although that kind of interferes with the rimless idea...

a slight inconvenience, but you can put a screen over the top when you're not looking at the tank, taking pics, etc... I mean who cares if it's rimless or not when no one is looking?

I guess that depends on how you would answer the question:

If a man says something, and no woman is around to hear him, is he still wrong?

I would be careful with Wrasses in a open top tank. Im in the same boat when it comes to stocking my new tank which is rimless (one cross brace though). I want a Wrasse so badly but the ones I have had in the past all jumped...but I had a canopy and they would smack their heads and end up back in the tank. Except one that got fried but a metal halide bulb and died a day later.

I love rimless tanks but I am wondering how practical they are. I am starting to learn that ALL fish are jumpers if they get stressed. I have had various fish in QT the past few months and two have jumped out. One was a young lionfish, he died. The other was my dogface puffer, I found him in time and hes fine. But these are two fish I would have NEVER guessed would jump. I have also had a Kole tang jump through a small opening in the back of my canopy once. That was weird.

If you have an open top tank and wrasses, you are unlikely to keep the wrasses in the tank. They WILL jump. Other fish will as well such as firefish, jawfish, etc, etc.

Rimless = dead fish over time.

I have a beautiful rimless tank, which I love however, I have had fish jump who normally wouldn't during my experience with this tank.

ie: 3 clowns, 2 percula's and 1 Ocelaris, have all jumped to their fate on the hardwood.

I can't say for wrasses because although I have always wanted one, I have never owned a tank big enough until now for one, but with my current track record. I might pass for now.

cheers
D.

i have had good luck with fish not jumping, but its hard to say that they wont jump for you when everyone else says they will.

I have a Leopard Wrasse that went MIA for few days in my rimless tank. I have not found it anywhere near the tank. I hope it just hiding or sleeping in the sand.

Yes, wrasses tend to jump but this can vary quite a bit by species. I had a masuda hog (peppermint) for years that one day disappeared (no, it didn't jump). Supposedly mystery wrasses can do well (at least given what friends say who have them on rimless tanks).

Sometimes having a predatory crab in your tank can spook fish at night when they're on the prowl and cause fish to jump. This happened to me and I found the crab and then had no further jumping issues (these were fish that are not known as jumpers, although any fish has the ability to jump).

I was afraid that most with rimless tanks would say they've had fish jump. Such a bummer since rimless tanks are soooooooo beautiful.
