IME Mags have proven their reliability over and over. I've gotten rid of all my Rio powerheads in favor of Koralias. I was never sure if the Rios were going to start up, and had one shock the heck out me once; the back blew off when SW got through the epoxy. The only Rio I have left in my rig is a 3100 running my skimmer. I had to replace the impeller once because it wasn't starting up. Haven't tried the Hypers, but I believe there was a review on Marine Depot that said they were noisy and generated a lot of heat. My 3100 is noisier than my mag 9.5

I never liked the idea that every Rio that I owned (past tense) at one point in time or multiple times, would not restart after a power interruption. I've never had that problem with any mag that I own.

I did have that problem with a Mag 5, but after replacing the impeller it works like a champ.

I've read way too many horror stories coming directly from Rio pumps in aquariums to ever suggest one, whether I've had personal experience with it or not. In my book, Rio is just a brand to stay away from.
