Rio Pumps Get Them Out!!!!!

I just wanted to share my experience with the reef keeping community. I remember a few months back a similair local area reefer has experience a problem similair to mine about the rio pumps leeching a petrolem based oil into the water destroying his whole tank. Well...this is what happened to me. I was at home (thank god) when my wife started screaming and said hurry up the tank is on fire! What had happend was my 10 gallon tank (thank god only the small tank) had a rio 600 PW pumpin water. This PW litlerally blew up and went into flames. The heat of the flames burned the RIO PIECE OF CRAP POWERHEAD and leeched alot petroluem based oil into the water. Immediately the PH heat was unpulgged and I began getting a bucket ready to transfer the fish and starfish that was in the tank. This poor tank looked the an oil tanker had dumped all of its load into the tank.......GRRRRRRRRRR!!! As I was getting the water ready for the livestock I noticed that one fish was already sick and laying on its side. I then started to work faster. I transfered all the fish, inclugding the one fish that was on its side immediately. After the fish were transferred the tank, sand and rock had to be thrown out. The rock was totally ruined and reeked of this burned oilly substance from the PW. Well as I said that thank god it was the little tank and not the bigger one. I will be removing all RIO pumps from my other tank ASAP. I do know that the rio pump on my larger tank is a new model, but I just do not trust this frisken pumps anymore. FOLKS DONT WAIT UNTIL IT HAPPENS TO YOU!!!! Dont let this pumps destroy your beutiful reefs or possibly burn your house down. AS I SAID BEFORE THANK GOD WAS HOME.

Have a great summer!

That is a bummer. Although I'm still suprised that people aren't taking action by removing these pumps after reading about others experiences with them.

Save the pump and bring it to IMAC this weekend, I believe RIO will have a booth there. ;)

Search back a few years and you will see similar warnings with rio pumps. Also warnings about stray voltage coming from them.

I have no idea why people even still buy these crappy pumps any more. Nothing good will come from it.

Wow, and yes, thank god you were home. Thats terrible. Good luck with all your livestock.

Has anyone ever contacted and complained to the company that makes these?

I think there was a Rio booth at IMAC (but I don't think anyone was standing there). You should bring it there and complain loudly.
Hopefully your fish recover!

Sorry to hear that. Hope your tank is all well. What Rio pump was it? Glad to see you back on the boards have not seen you here for a while.

AJ I saw the rep, I didnt spit on him but I gave him the evil eye. He looked at me all wierd but I think he got the message.

Thanks! LOL

I feel your pain man. I had a similar Exxon experience. Hopefully things will recover. I had minimal losses when it happened to me.
Lots of carbon and water changes.
Good luck.

well so far everything has survived.....I just tossed the rest. IT was only a 10 gallon tank. thank god!!

I smelled electical smoke from my tank and it was from the RIO! It was actually sparking to another under water pump. This caused 1/2 of my stock to die almost overnight. I don't understand why people even buy them.

Sorry to here about the pump AJ glad there were no casualties . I'm using a rio 600 on my outdoor fountain....I quess it will be ok out there....but I wont be using any of my other 2 rio's on my new setup now.

You guys have convinced me. I am done with rio's for sure. Not worth saving a couple of bucks in exchange for worrying about settin' the house on fire. Thanx for letting us know about this abfleck.
