Riviera Maya

We went there in 06 and snorkled in XEL HA. It was awesome it is a lagoon right off the ocean that mixes with the river running off of the mountain. There's ALOT of fish 2 see there. Really big ones. Its well worth the trip over there from the resort. Also there is excellent diving there as well in the Sonotaes. I believe thats how you spell it.

If you go to XEL HA don't miss out on the Sea Trek. You put a diving helmet on and go under water and walk around on the ocean floor. It's only about ten feet deep there, but way too cool. Lots of fish. Also, if you can make a trip to Cozumel you would like snorkeling there. Jacques Cousteau called it one of the five best dive sites in te world. There is also the Atlantis Submarine there that was cool. We went 108 feet down to the ocean floor. Everything at that depth is blue.

if you go to Xel Ha, make sure to venture away from the entry points. Most of the better viewing we found was at the far end of the park from where you enter. They had caves and a broader selection of fish and corals to check out.

We also took a day trip to Cozumel and really enjoyed the snorkeling there.

I second zimmyfan on the Akumal recommendation. Beautiful place with very high chance of seeing large turtles. I've heard that Half Moon Bay (just north of Akumal's main bay) has more turtles, but I didn't see any there. I saw several in Akumal's main bay. I later heard that you need to swim out to the north part of Half Moon Bay to find the turtles, which I did not do.

Cozumel has some good shore snorkeling at Playa Corona, which is not far south from the main town on Cozumel. A taxi will take you there for around $5 I think. There's a bar/restaurant there where you can order some lunch and beer, then head into the water. I saw some French Angels and a large Queen Trigger there.

Thanks for the recommendations. We went to Cozumel and actually I thought the snorkeling was better outside of our resort than in Cozumel. I can post pics if anybody is interested.

You got it.
The first bunch is from right outside our resort.

More Cenotes...
I guess the stalactites grow about a centimeter every 80 years...

If you go to Akumal Bay, try Yal Ku Lagoon it is easy to snorkel and to get to. It has parking and also a little taco stand, costs about $6 to park and to use their facility. Xel Ha is about $25 per person without the food included.
If you are in the area anyway, consider going to Tulum. The ruins are incredible and the beach is so soft.
