RO/DI filter help???

I've got one of the Typhoon III extreme 150gpd and I need to replace the filters and the DI. I'm kinda lost looking at their site, you can get the Typhoon replacement package, but is it the same as the one you get from the original system when first bought? It looks different to me and they call it different names as well. I want the same item as I first bought the system, not a different one to replace it. Help?

I think most of them are 10" replacements. All you need to do is check the size.

Then check the micron size of the filter and choose the one you like.

For example. For the sediment filter you can go with 5 micron, 1 micron, .5 mincron or .2 micron.

My recommendation is to stay with the .5 micron (not 5 micron) sediment prefilter. That is what will protect your RO membrane. I got about 8 years out of a membrane using that.

The typhoon replacement pack is the same as you had in your unit when first purchased, so that would be the easy way to go. I replace my filters every 6 months, and the DI once/year, so I purchase the "6-pack" of filters (http://www.airwaterice.com/product/6PACK/6_Pack_Filters.html), and buy the DI separately.

This also lowers the price a bit. I think you can get the six pack of filters and a DI for not much more than the Typhoon Pack. :)

I need to replace mine soon... its been a while, but I only make an average of 5g a week, so they should be fine. :)

Thanks guys!

Jack, do you get the mixed and fill it yourself? I've read you have to stuff and pack real good....

Harry, they only have one micron available..... Would it be wise to get all one micron carbon blocks as well? Or will it slow down production?

I've done it both ways -- bought the prepacked thingy, and also bought the stuff in the bag and packed it myself. I prefer getting the prepacked 'cause it is a whole lot easier :)

Mike;

Check Premium Aquatics or Marine Depot. They both have .5 micro prefilters. I don't think the microns matter so much on the carbon filter since the water has already gone through the sediment filter. A few people didn't believe that I got that much life from a RO membrane. Of course, some of those people bought the cheap 5 micron filters from Lowe's that they sell with their home water filter systems.

I use a SpectraPure unit that I got almost 10 years ago. I don't really think the brand name means much because I think they all use the same filter cartridges. Somebody correct me if you think I'm wrong.

Mine has two DI cartridges with a TDS meter with a wire going to a sensor between the two. That way you know when the primary cartridge need replacing (I just replace the resin in mine). When the test light goes from green to red, you move the secondary cartridge to the primary position and replace the cartridge in the primary and put it back in as secondary. The meter also has some dip switches that you change to test your RO membrane. I use about 35 - 40 gallons a week and replace my sediment and carbon filters every 6 months (or whenever I can remember it).

I think a lot people use Air Water & Ice units and are satisfied. Like I said, I think all they do is daisy chain the filters together and connect the tubing.

You'll find that if you use one good quality carbon block, there's really no need for a second carbon stage unless you have some specific water quality issue you are trying to address.
