RO/DI Filter Question

I have a Kent Maxima Hi-S 60gpd filter and I need to replace my filters but need some clarification. What is the difference in a TFC membrane and a Hi S (silicate) filter? I am trying to figure out what would be better for me to go with.

It's something Kent uses to get you to buy their membrane...

TFC is Thin Film Composite material, what most membranes are made of. It's a material manufactured by DOW Chemical and sold to various membrane manufacturers. You may also see a CTA or Cellulose Tri Acetate membrane which is a material that is generally used for smaller output membranes.

Get a DOW filmtec it's rated at a lower pressure and gives you the best performance for the buck.

I've never seen Kent produce anything that proves their membrane is any different than anyone else's.

Thanks RandalB,
I have been looking at membranes today and it does not look like filmtec has a 60 gpd filter. Can I upgrade to 75?

Yep,
Just change out the membrane with a 75. You don't even need to change the flow restrictor, they are close enough.

I have an old 4 stage filter. (three canisters and an RO membrane) It has been several years since I've used it and I need to get a new membrane and I'd like to know what to get filter wise, to fill the first two cannisters. I know I want the last cannister to be the DI resin, but What micron filters do I get for the first two?

Thanks in advance.

Also, Randal, could you describe the flow restrictor. I think the last RO membrane that I had was a 100 day, but I've decided to go with the 75. Can I just swap it over?

Thanks
Aaron

Aaron - assuming you are on city water without chloramines, and you don't have an particular issue with heavy sediment loads, and assuming your current system is configured to provide water to the last housing after the water goes through the RO membrane:
1. 1 mic sediment filter
2. 0.5 mic carbon block
3. 75 gpd membrane (and new flow restrictor), and
4. Refillable DI resin cartridge.

Make sure you clean and sanitize the system before you put the new filters in it. We can email you instructions if you'd like.

If you are not sure if your system is configured to provide water to the last housing before, or after, the water goes through the RO, we can help you further if you tell us the brand name/model, and or provide some pictures.

Thanks,
Russ

Thank you very much. I believe it is routed so that the last filter is after the RO membrane. I am on city water. And thanks for the Sanitize recommendation. I'll just wash it out with 10% clorine solution.

As far as the flow restrictor that goes on after the membrane correct? To provide sufficient back pressure to maximize the percolation through the membrane. Is my understanding correct?

Thanks
Aaron
