want to finally buy my own ro/di unit. (my friend has been making me water)
so here is the question. there are so many units and places to buy from. i seen them go for 99 bucks up to 375
have 3 membrains and have 5 . so i just go onto brs or marine depo nd buy those units, i seen them cheaper on the filter guys website. what is the difference and what is overkill

also how many gpd is needed, i wil assume that depends on the size of your tanks though

There are long term benefits to additional cartridges and many of the "bells and whistles" that you will likely wish you had purchased as part of a complete package rather than saving a few dollars up front and then needing to purchase those items later on and adding them to your basic system which will in the end cost you more money. Here are the extras that I think you will want:
-A second DI canister. This will allow you to get full use out of your DI resin. Most of us replace our DI resin as soon as the TDS goes from zero to 1, even though there is still life left in the resin. When you have two DI resin cartridges, when your TDS jumps to 1 you remove the fist DI cartridge in line and then move the second DI cartridge into the #1 slot. Replace the spent resin in the old #1 cartridge and place it in the #2 position. That way the used resin in the old #2 cartridge will continue to absorb pollutants until it is nearly completely spent. Adding a second DI cartridge will pay for itself in a few months.
-Duel or even Triple TDS meter. You need to take TDS readings from the final RO/DI product produced, but it is very helpful to get TDS readings after the RO membrane and before the first DI cartridge, and also after the first DI cartridge and before the second one if you do run two DI cartridges.
-Pressure Gauge, get a good oil filled one. Place this after your initial sediment and carbon cartridges so you know when to replace them from the pressure drop.
RO Membrane flush valve. You need to flush your RO membrane before and after each use to get maximum life out of the membrane.
-it's also nice to have a separate hand held TDS meter.

I got one from The filter Guys, 6 or 7 years ago. I shot them an email and they really helped out.

That being said you can't really go wrong with any of the sponsors on here. They all seem to be very helpful answering questions and helping out.

if you want to take advantage of your strong dollar , try giving auqasafecanada.com a call ! They offer free US/Canadian shipping on all systems and guarantee no cross border fee's , tax or duties. I got the 5 Stage 100 GPD RO/DI Aquarium Water Filtration System and I have been using it for 1+ year with no issues at all , I have really good water where I live as they already have a industrial filtration system on the water main so my filters are still giving me 0 TDS even after a year of use. with the exchange rate this unit will run you down 110USD (its 141$ CAD)
