RO/DI TDS Results

Hello All,

I have been spending practically every free minute I have reading through the forums and threads of RC and trying to gain as much knowledge as possible. I appreciate this site and everyone's input and time! This is really an amazing resource of information.

I have not really posted until now. After reading so much about RO/DI water on here, I purchased a unit for my tank back in January. I later learned that a TDS meter was necessary to monitor the performance of your unit. So, I just purchased 2 TDS meters and hooked them up today.

In an attempt to make my life a little easier, I hooked up 1 meter to the source water line and to the line coming out of the membrane. I hooked the second meter to the line after the DI resin. This way I could monitor all 3 levels without unhooking tubing, etc...

Here are my results after running over 5 minutes:

TDS in 152 ppm
TDS after membrane 1 ppm
TDS after DI 0 ppm

I thought that the TDS in seemed pretty low compared to the other numbers I have seen out there. I am wondering if this is affected by my water softner? Anyways, I wanted to post these numbers and see if this looks about right to everyone...

Thanks!

those numbers look good. I would however get a handheld TDS meter also. the digital ones like what you have a great for a quick check but a handheld is more accurate.

do you also have a pressure guage? if so what is your pressure?

I have not checked the pressure, nor do I have a pressure gauge. Would this benefit me as well?

After 3 hours of running, the following levels are reported:

TDS in has been as high as 192 and is currently 176 ppm
TDS after membrane as high as 2 and is currently 1 ppm
TDS after DI 0 ppm

a pressure guage will let you know how well the RO filters are working. if your pressure is 60psi now but drops after 4 months then you will want to change them out. you will want to change those out every 6 months regardless of how good they are though, they help protect the membrane.

I had heard about the 6 month replacement before. But thank you for the info on the pressure gauge. Are these "quick connect" john guest fittings able to be disconnected? Or are they permanent? I couldn't figure out how do disconnect them.

yes they make them with the john guest fittings as well.

to disconnect a john guest fitting you will notice an inner ring that sticks out a little more than the main body of it. all you do is push in on the inner ring while pulling the tube out.
