Can this be used for water changes in a fresh water aquarium?

yes but keep in mind that the water is very soft and has a lower ph. So it really depends on what types of fish you have. I use it on my freshwater tank but i have discus, angels, and tetras.

well, just to let you know that it will drop the ph of the tank so if he has african cichlids, they are not going to like it. South American's like the Oscar should be fine. Just like a salt tank, just 20% a month. I only say that because fish usually only tolerate a .2 drop/raise in ph a day.
