alot of people knock it but I have been using Ro Buddy 50gpd for the last 8 months pours 0 tds have had to change the di twice. I make around 17g a week for w/c and top-offs I run a 56 column and I pour 175 tds from the tap.
the unit was $100 the replacement di runs around $15 for a half gallon. and $10 apiece for sediment and carbon replacements $40 for a new membrane
edit it's now $75
I was looking at that... I cant justify dropping 150 on one when I still need a protein skimmer to replace my canister!

Don't confuse expense with value.
I have a BRS 4-stage 75 GPD unit that works flawlessly. I paid about $150 for it 3 years ago and costs about $75 a year for new filters, resin etc. I use a lot of water and it paid for itself quickly. Not just in water cost, but in time and energy spent lugging jugs from the LFS.
This livestock we keep requires high quality water and being in control of the supply just makes sense While a skimmer is also a necessity, your water source should be your number one priority, IMO.

I have one I purchased from a water filter company. It is identical to BRS. I started with that and bought a protein skimmer several months later. I noticed a difference of color and algea just from using ro/di. I used to find the cheapest everything. I learned I should have saved and got the good stuff or get nothing at all.
BRS refill cost me $22 just over once a year.

Yeah, I'm not saying go drop a load of cash for RO/DI but there are a lot of affordable options.
I bought a Marine Depot KleanWater 4-Stage Advanced RO/DI System - 100 GPD. Which includes Pressure Gauge, inline TDS Meter and Manual Flush Valve for $180. Which I feel is a great deal. Plus you get 15% off for life on replacement cartridges. I spend roughly $50.00 a year on replacements.

I decided to go with the Marine Depot one since it has a Special Clohorine/ Chloramines filter which I could add instead of a standard one and well the 15% for life on Cartridges also.
I see a lot of people using the Spectrapure Refurbished 90GPD ones also and I believe they are like $112.00. I guess it depends on what you feel you need to have with addons like TDS meter and Pressure Gauges, Flush Valves etc.
Just remember the spectra pure doesn't include shipping and it was gonna be another 25.00 for shipping.

Suggest you talk to a vendor you trust - get a system that fits your needs without any un-needed extras. Shop on best value, not lowest price.
If lowest price is actually what you need, go to ebay - there's plenty of low cost systems on there just waiting for an unsuspecting buyer...

I have the same unit. I love it, 250 TDS in, and 0 TDS out. Easy to know when to change the filters and 15% off for life is definitely a plus (if you use it for like 5 years you basically just paid for the unit with your savings).
I'd go with either the Marine Depot or BRS units, but I went with Marine Depot and couldn't be happier.
