Can some one tell me in good detail what is the significants of using RO/DI water and what problems will go away as a result of using this type of water versus using tap filter water??????
Regular tap water contains additives and contaminants (in small amounts) which are sutable for drinking (chloramine, chlorine, arsenic, flouride, etc...) When this water gets into your stomach you just digest it and move on. Fish however are less likely to be able to process out harsh chemicals. The RO/DI filtration reduces if not eliminates these particulates and therefore makes happier fish.
Simply put, if you want your corals to thrive and your tank free of nasty algae such as hair algae, use RO/DI water. Secondly, you can save a lot of money and time in the long run by investing in an RO/DI unit and not buy water from local fish store. Third, get a food safe container to store your water in.
It was the ONLY thing that worked in finally getting rid of my green hair algae...I had low lighting periods...a refugium full of nitrate sucking algaes...nothing worked...until RO/DI. It's hard to keep nutrients down when you're adding nutrients every single time you top off with tap water.
Oh, and my corals really took off as well...like day and night!
OK Kool.............. I just did a water change last night with RO/DI. I have been struggling with brown algea, high nitrates and high nutrients. I bought my system a week ago and last night was the first chance I got to do a water change with the RO/DI water. I can wait to see the change.
Good water by itself is not the answer to everything. You will not see overnight miracle results but it will help.
Nitrates and nutrients can be due to over feeding, not enough live rock or a DSB for colonizing bacteria, insufficient circulation etc.
The advantage of RO/DI water is consistency. Since water is the single largest ingredient in your system and everything depends on it it pays to provide only the best. By owning an RO/DI you alone control the water quality going into your tank.
I know a few other things contributed to my nitrate problem. I have corrected those issues also. This was the last thing on the list to correct some issues in the tank.
Also I have learn not to be so critical with my tank. I would watch every water change and try to correct right away. You have to have patience and some times fall back and let it do its thing.
