I am about to purchase a 50 gal plastic storage tank to hold my RO water for water changes. Is it safe to store the water in plastic garbage cans (new clean ones of course).

Yes it is. But any new container "should" be cured prior to use. New plastics have a tendency to leach.

just make sure it's food grade, some do leach phosphate, best if you get one from a farm supply not the cheap once they sell at the walmart

OOooo nnnnooooo They leach. I just got a garbage can and rised it and now its my ro can. How do you cure a garbage can?
