RO unit parts

RO/DI means Reverse Osmosis/De-ionized.

Essentially, it's just a type of water that has been filtered and purified so that it doesn't contain any toxins or any other stuff that might have a negative impact on the aquarium (nitrates, phosphates, etc).

You can buy RO/DI water from lots of different places, but if you have a large tank (or multiple tanks), it gets tiresome lugging all of that water around and it's a lot nicer to be able to make it yourself. Thus the RO/DI units we are talking about...

This brings me to a brainstorm I was having the other day while commuting to work and my always looking for the longterm lazy way to do something.....

Is it possible to use a RO/DI unit along with some sort of automatic valve to fill your tank? I was thinking along the lines of using a Toilet tank valve/float system in a fuge tank which is where the evaporation would occur if I'm not mistaken. The return pump would keep the level in the show tank at the same height. Could you just make something up MacGyver style to top off the tank automatically???

Why not just buy one? ;)

Do they really have the plastic conectors at Home Despot and Lowes? I went to every hardware store in town except those, all they had were brass ones, which I was a little leery of buying.

I always go to Menards on the S.W. side and I know they have them. They should be right in the same area as the brass, I'm not sure if they have Guest fittings but look for Jaco brand. Another place that carries them is Do it Best Hardware.

HD/Lowes carry the 1/4" Polyeurethane tubing?

I just got my system from the Filter-Guys and the input/output/waste lines are all way too short. I also need a float valve so hopefully they care those too.

You can find almost all of the connectors and hose and stuff and HD or Lowe's. Those parts are cheap it would be a waste to mailorder $4 of parts for $8 worth of shipping.

Good luck.

Just an FYI.

The selections at HD (CR) and Menards (Marion) were both pretty poor. They didn't have float valves, they did have a few of the plastic connectors (at menards) and they did have the tubing.

However, the tubing was not as heavy duty as the "John Guest" stuff that came with my RO/DI unit from the filter guys.

So... I ended up just ordering the float switch and extra tubing from them. I trust them and I know they ship quickly.
