RO units

Just curious if anyone has had good/bad results using the home RO units (Lowes or menards sell) as opposed to one sold to the aquarium community.

No experience with the home RO units. However, an RO unit is an RO unit. The drinking water and the Aquarium filtration RO units perform the same task. However, the filter changing might cost more with the home unit. I don't know what they are rated for. (water volume)
An Aquarium RO unit you could drink the filtered water the same.

I use a 3 stage Whirlpool RO unit with a 2 gallon storage tank from Lowes that's installed on my kitchen sink. Works great for me, but I have pretty good water straight from the tap so I don't need 5 stages. In terms of quality, the filters are carbon and TFC, which is no different than what you get with "aquarium" RO systems, but they usually do not have a DI stage, which most people need to get down to 0 TDS. For about the same amount of money as you pay for a 3 stage "kitchen quality" unit like I have, you can buy a less attractive 4 or 5 stage unit you can attach to a faucet as needed.

This is the exact unit i have

Total cost to replace all 3 filters is about $90 (RO cartridge is most expensive part). I usually change filters every 4-6 months, depending on what my use has been.

Just fyi, Spectapure is having some sales right now. They tend to be a popular brand.

I used their lower end 90gpd RO model for several years and it worked pretty well. It's been in storage since 2006, though, and I think I may just end up buying the refurbished 120 RODI unit they've got listed on their page since it'd only be like $30 more than me buying new filters for my much older unit, plus I'd get the DI benefits.

you can get a tds meter and test your water see what you have coming out of your ro unit probably have 3 to 5 ppm. if so get a t fitting and branch off the supply to faucet and buy a di filter cost around $40 put a shut off before di filter so when u are not making ro/di it will go to storage tank
