i dont have access to ro water anymore and cant afford the set up right now is there any other way any one recommends to make salt water and top off water. i read something about boiling tap water from a well but not to sure???

There really is no substitute for RO/DI water, although bottled distilledwater can be used. Distilled water is cost prohibitive in all but the smallest tank. You can buy a nice, portable RO/DI unit from Air, Water, Ice (see Sponsor forum) for around $100. It's called the Mighty Mite. There are other sources for good units, but the Mighty Mite is the one with which I am most familiar.

No substitute for the right equipment.

Look for used on local Craig's list and local reef club website.

More importantly, turn to local reef frineds. (Join a club if not in one already.)

And finf a close reefer friend who can supply you with water. later, when you get your system and his/hers goes out you can return the favor.

Even with an Ro/DI system, we all experience at one time or another - no cartridges becasue you forgot to order them, or the membrane goes out, or something. So, make a contact/friend and have a backup.

their is no walmart in your town or a grocery for water? i think boiling water will just condense the medals and other waste. Might kill bacteria but not metal.

Yea, just use tape water and Marine stress coat so it does not make your skimmers go nuts. I have used it for 5 years now and no problem. I make it 35 gallon trash cans, put an airline in it to O2 it, let it mix for 4 hours (some suggest24) and whamOOO. Just test the water before you put it in your tank.

Yes, RO/DI water is the best but for me not cost affective. I tried it once and my water bill went through the roof and wasted to much water. I also, just mainly have FOWLR tanks. Just a few corals.

some people use tap water with no problems. it depends greatly on your local water supply and how clean the water is when it gets to yours house (trust me. it's not that clean normally) water will also pick up lead and copper as it flows through copper pipes. a RO is near a must if your going to run a reef. Yes, a RO filter does have a lot of "waste" water. Find uses for it. When I make RO water I run the waste hose in to the washer. Normally, when I have the amount of water I need the washer is full and ready to start the cycle.
