Who uses ro and who does not/ Why do you or dont you use it? I dont use it and wondered how many others dont. It never has effected my tank. Heck I havent run a skimmer for over 2 months now. Thanks
i buy my water from Aquatic Critter. Dont have an RO unit and probably couldnt work it if I did have one. Wished I could get away with tap, would be much cheaper...
I havent, and dont really know what to test for. I know if I do end up setting this 58 gal. Im probably gonna start up with tap and hope for the best...
I now have RODI water exclusively. I didnt till april. used tap water. since then, I have noticed a big difference in my tnak. I scrub the glass less often, have ZERO cyano, and overall, the tank looks much more pristine. I live in rutherford county with very hard water. it registers 161 on my tds at times. Tons of metals, chlorine, phosphates in it..
I dunno.. using tap water scares me. I have a ro/di and only put filtered water in my tank. Last I checked my tap water is pretty high in phosphates. I run a phosphate filter packed with rowaphos. It would seem counter-productive of me to use tap water. Some things work for some and doesnt for others.

For me there is no other source for tank water, not even in an emergency.
I got away with using Distilled water for years, but with only average results.
After going to RODI, I have had Great sucess. no more Diatom blooms, phosphate sponges, Phosphate spikes and no more Cyano. I did have some hitchhiker nusiance algae, and even bubble algae, but my crabs made short work of that.
basically it wont grow in my tank. And if I introduce it, it will either wither, or be eaten.
Without invasive algaes, diatoms, and phosphate removing products there is much more opportunity for your corals to thrive. Why not use RODI? and really get things going.
All of the places I've lived since I started in the hobby had decent amounts of copper in the water. When I first started I had no idea that I had to worry about the water (always used tap for fresh) and as a result I had problems with losing inverts for the first month or so. Since then, I've realized that there are so many things in the water that could make life much more difficult.
yeah my water is 130tds. Not too bad but who only knows what that 130 "total dissolved solids" are? http://www.tdsmeter.com/abouttds.html <- good reading
4. Aquariums/Aquaculture A constant level of minerals is necessary for aquatic life. The water in an aquarium or tank should have the same levels of TDS and pH as the fish and reef's original habitat.
What is the TDS in natural saltwater? What is in it?
