Roberts IM Nuvo 20 peninsula build

Hey all

I decided to document my build on the forum here as I have seen very little information out there regarding the nuvo peninsula setups (either the 14 or 20) & wanted to contribute to anyone who is interested in this set up.

I am getting back into the hobby after about 12 years away and am older and wiser.

The goal is to get this to a mixed reef but will start it as mainly a zoa and lps.

Tank will arrive next Monday & I have an AI Prime waiting for it that I got a great deal on through Craigslist.

I am not planning on dropping a skimmer in back out of the getgo but will get rid of the sock in favor for the custom caddy media basket.

I have a great location set for the tank location on top of a countertop that separates the kitchen from the living room so I'm really excited about that.

Any and all input along the way is appreciated. Not everyone can say they're a reef noob twice in life but I'm happy to be!

I just settled on the IM nuvo 20 peninsula myself. I'm getting back in after about a decade out too.

Here's my daughter with a very oversized package. I got the tank from marine direct and was happy that I could pay less than my local LFS for the tank, free shipping and he care they put into packing.

Still more- I'll jump forward now.

Mind the clutter- this peninsula tank is perfect for the granite countertop separating our play room to kitchen/dining area. I love that the whole middle level of our townhouse can see the tank.

I went with a mix of live Fiji with dry tonga branch. I'm sure the scape is going to change in the future but I'm 1/2 satisfied with it currently.

I have a AI prime hd light on top with the flex arm mount. Reason is this tank is a bit long and I need to angle the light a little bit for full coverage I think.

I got the custom caddy or whatever it's called. The 3 part insert instead of sock that comes with the tank. Sponge/carbon/boyd chemi-pure.

I got an aquamedic ecodrift pump 4.1. I'll see how it goes.

Cobalt 75 watt heater.

I'll update you in a week or so to let you know how I think it's running.

I love these peninsula tanks ... I thought about taking my Nuvo 30 down and replacing it with one of these.

Just redid my scape. I'll be getting some smaller rock to boost the middle piece up and make some more little cave work. Like this setup more because there's a lot of little spots for fish to get in and out.

Here's some photo updates. In chronological order older to newer.

I changed the AI prime HD to a nankbox duo M I found on eBay. Overall very happy with that change. The AI for some reason just looked too.... Digital.

I spent 2 weeks in California with my wife's family just as the tank was completed cycling. Somehow my power head MOVED vertical resulting in water loss, water dropping below needed overflow levels and ultimately had no circulation for anywhere between 12-60 hours (not sure). Lost 2 zoanthid frags (had 4 & a frogspawn) in that. Luckily my sister has SW experience and took care of it while I was gone.

3 weeks ago added my first fish - a purple Dotty back & fire shrimp. At same time started feeding 1/2 cube frozen mysis per day per LFS recommendation. Honestly it seemed like too much but continued. As a result I'm dealing with some green algae - as it's still a new tank I figured to continue doing exactly what I'm doing and if a month goes by with no improvement I'll look at making a change.

Yesterday we purchased a pair of clowns and a couple green shrooms. Some simple captive bread ocellaris. My daughter's preference. But the last 20 hours have been trying to figure out names as they will NOT be called Nemo and Marlin as she wants.

As far as other issues - I am not sure if this is cyano or a sponge in the 3rd pic. Otherwise it's going alright.

So it should come off easily? I read somewhere that using a new toothbrush on the rock is a good idea? I would think it would just get into the rest of the tank that way?

Looking good. I'm considering this tank in the 14gal configuration as a replacement for my current tank while I downsize a bit. Do it have a glass cover ? What do you have running in the compartments currently ?

I really like the tank so far, can't wait to watch it grow in.

For the cyano, you can use a toothbrush, but as with anything you wouldn't want elsewhere in the tank (algae, etc), it's best to siphon it out. Cyano also often happens when there are deadspots with low flow, so you often want to change up the flow so that the cyano gets blown away and that area gets more flow generally. It doesn't always work that way (I've seen super-high flow SPS tanks with a mat of cyano on the sand bed), but that's generally the case.

When I started dosing multiple bacteria, my small patches of cyano went away (MicroBacter 7 and Prodibio, both temporarily). Whether it was necessarily causation or not, I don't know, but it definitely correlated.
