Rock Question

I have left over rock from a tank I had a few years ago. I cleaned it, boiled it, bleached it, and boiled it again. So it's clean, dead base rock now.

I've had it sitting in salt water for over a month now. Changed the water to make sure no bleach came off the rocks. Had a power head pushing water all around the rocks also.

My question is: if i were to put a little bit of sand (from a fellow reefers tank) on top of the rocks to seed them with pods, would it eventually have pods all over the rocks and help with anything? or is this a waste of time.

Of course it all depends on what he has in his sand. I'd just put it on the ground and not in the rocks, critters will find there way around. You could buy a couple live rocks and help seed it.

Agree ^

Use this as base rock, but get some live rock to seed it.

Take the live sand and add it to your sand. bio-diversity is a good thing.

Not necessarily a waste of time. The live sand will help seed the sandbed, but I would add a couple of new pieces of live rock to help seed your base rock. There will be more life in the live rock like bristleworms and such than in a cup of sand, imo.

My tank will not be setup for awhile. Is it ok if I purchase the live rock and let it sit with the base rock without having light on it?

Should I skim the water?

Would it hurt to put a little sand in with the rocks? I don't want to get a lot since I do not want to disturb the sand when I finally move it to the display tank.

without light, the coraline algae will die. tossing some sand in would help with critters getting in the rock, but without heat, they're dead, too.

It is called "Live" rock for a reason. It has life on it that need to be sustained. That means, water, oxygen, nutrients, lights etc.
