Rock @ the critter?

Is Sailing the Seas
Anyone go to the critter this weekend? I went sunday & every tank in the place had some nice looking live rock in it. They were calling it caribbean rock. Looked real close to the rock from Tampa Bay saltwater. It was 9.99 a lb. It was the most live rock ive ever seen at the store though.

yea, it's been there for a month or so...I bought a few peices for my sump, but couldn't afford much at that price. That is the rock they got in all the mantis on I believe...definitely some of the nicest LR I've ever seen though.

I bought some for my 5.5g this weekend...pricey, but it's nice. I wouldn't want to fill up a big tank with that rock though....Talk about thinning out the wallet!

I got some small pieces out of the first shipment they got in when I set up my nano and ended up with some cool extras - bright red tunicates and some neat unidentifiable polyps. It's pricey, but it has a TON of growth on it, not to mention that mine has loads of coraline already. Makes great rock for an itty bitty tank because it's beautiful and not quite as painful when you only need enough for a 2.5...

When we were in this weekend, one of the staff was trying to catch a tang for us and made the comment that it's nice for people being able to pick out specific pieces of rock but makes catching the fish a pain in the rear...as she almost stuck her hand into a lion fish that was hiding behind a piece of the beautiful rock...I'm not sure they're all as happy about it as we are :)

yea i was there a few days ago....ill prob pick some up the end of this week...but 10 bucks per lb......man thats a little rough

I got a small piece of that, hoping that the macro-algae on it would grow in my tank...but it disappeared quickly...will it come back?

do you have a tang in the tank?

I wonder where they ordered the rock from? Will they be exclusivly stocking this rock from now on or did they just get a really good one time deal.

kev-dog1, I ripped most of the macro algae off of my rock, and it keeps trying to come back, needing to be pruned every other week or so! i would say keep the faith from my experience, it'll should sprout back up...

They intend on keeping it as long as it keeps selling.......or so that's what I was told.

There's tons of critters on that stuff.
And it's also flat.....at least on one side. It would make some nice shelves.

Moriah - No, no tangs...just a couple of clowns, a Schneider goby and a Canary blenny

I hope it comes back...just wanted to try a more natural look for a while.

Wonder if they are getting the Florida aquacultured stuff in because of what's going on in Fiji?

I miss the Critter:(

not sure about the rock reasoning. They don't seem to be doing ORA anymore due to high DOA or almost DOA and having a viable alternative (Matt). They have being using a transhipper every other week for the past few months for corals and are getting a lot of cool LPS and zoas in...no SPS to speak of, but good to see the variety that I wasn't seeing for a long time.

I just know as much as I have been envious of Walt Smith's job in the past I am not envious of it now:(

I just hope everything works out over there...and the reefing part is the least of it.

Have I derailed the thread enough now:p

I was there the last time this happened, june 01. you'd really be surprised at how its "business as usual" in the islands. The mainland however is a far different place, it is populated mostly by immigrants from India and has that "3rd world feel".
Most reefs are controlled by the individual island communities. When we left, they off loaded peoples baggage to get the last few boxes marked "Live Fish" on the plane...lol.
Even now, IMHO, its the most peaceful place to be (on the outer islands anyway)

I, too, have rock, but not Florida. It'll be heading to a new home this weekend, if at all possible, unless someone decides they want it...
