id like to see how your display looks.

The rock could be in a sump - there are a few tanks here with little or no rock in the display - but sorry , dont have links.

No rock = no good source for bio filtration. I suppose it could be done with other methods, of course...but why?

You'd be amazed at how little substrate (meaning no sand and very little if any liverock) is necessary to sustain a tank. I'll submit Leonardo's setup.

The idea that you "need" a certain amount of liverock is mostly baseless, and this type of setup can be done with great success.

thanks, leonardos tank is very nice, although id prefer it with sand.

like its been said, the rock could be held in the sump.

i like the look of a tank when the rock is really low, like your above it , instead of looking at the side of a reef, if you see what i mean

Many reefers are going to a "patch reef" setup because they like to have to open area for either fish to swim or corals to grow. As far as not having enough LR to sustain your system, that is completely situational. You could have a low bio-load and not need as much LR, you could have high bio-load and great mechanical filtration, you could have high bio-load and religiously perform your water changes... I hope you see where im going with this! :) If you do decide to go this route, just remember to post pictures for us!

yeh i see what your saying, and totally agree.
i follow the shallow reef club thread and due to the height of some of their tank the rockwork needs to be low. looks great imo.

There is a tank in Spokane Washington at a fish store that is a 600+gallon and I bet that I have more rock in my 75. The tank is the most amazing tank I have seen in person. It is a penninsula style with just a little rock in the middle and amazing SPS colonies filling up the rest of the tank. He wouldn't have been able to get any where near the amount of coral if he had more rock. I think that a penninsula looks really good without a lot of rock.
