RODI Shut off options....

I am about to order a 5 stage RODI from Bulk Reef Supply and would like to know what else I need to go along with it.

The unit is a 'plus' and seems to come with everything. My one concern is how I am going to control the unit in terms of shutting it off.

I will have a standard set up where I will fill a garbage can with the good water and send the waste to drain. The unit I am getting has a built in Auto Shut Off Valve. I am confused as to how the unit will know when to shut down and how that will happen.

Kind of confusing when we consider float switches, solenoids and other options.

If anyone could enlighten me as to what I need to have the unit stop flowing once my garbage can is full that would be great. I am having a hard time understanding how even a float switch will communicate with the RODI unit or the installed Auto shut off valve.

Lots if help needed.

Thanks

you need an

auto shut off valve (included)
Float Valve (to go in trash can, note it's not a float "switch")
Check valve (so water doesn't go backwards)

Bulk reef supply sells a kit that does exactly what you are looking for, and they have a good instructional video explaining what everything does... check it out in the RODI Accessories area..

I haven't confirmed but I would think the 'plus' system would come with the auto shutoff valve as well as the mechanical float to shut off the RO/DI product line. As to how the float valve 'communicates' with the auto shutoff unit, it's simply a matter of back pressure. Once your tank is full and the float valve closes, back pressure builds up in the system. As the backpressure increases to the required level, the auto shutoff valve senses this increased pressure and does it's magic, all mechanical.

Having said that, I have the auto shutoff and float valve on my system and during a couple of trials have been unable to get the waste water to stop running. I've heard that it can take 10 minutes or more for the waste water to cut off, but I haven't been willing to wait that long, so shut off the tap supply manually. For my source water feed, I've added a tee in the piping to my washer cold water supply and also have a quarter turn ball valve to turn off the water to the RO/DI unit.

somethings fishy there... my waste water shuts off in less than 30 seconds of the float valve stopping the purified water line...

OK, thanks Joander, I'll have to check my components to see what's up.

For the OP, I just checked the specs on your BRS 5 stage 'plus' system and while it lists an auto shutoff valve, there's no mention of a float switch. Check the following link to view what they offer as a complete auto shutoff kit and maybe contact them to ensure this is what is included.

Do you people have a check valve on both the drain and supply lines?

Only check valve I can find on my system (BWI) is between the output of the RO membrane housing and the auto shutoff valve. The drain line only has the combination flow restrictor/flush valve.
