RODI waste water for fresh water tank?

Hey all, My 9 year old is getting a 47 gallon bow tank for fresh water. With our reef tanks, I was always looking for something to do with the waste water from that setup. Is it good for fresh water tanks?

It is just filtered water to a point right?

Thanks for any insight.

Yes. The water run off from your RODI unit is still better than regular tap water in any case cause it's been filtered. You can most definitely get away with this but even for fresh water I'd personally just use RODI water. In the long run your fish/plants and other live stock will thank you for it.

Just an fyi, I save most of some of my runoff for the wife to water her plants with or to flush and clean equipment.

It's better in that it's been sediment and carbon filtered, but it probably has higher TDS...which is probably fine.

What fish will you be keeping? They may not care.

I use it for house plants, but I wouldn't use it for fresh water tanks...convince me otherwise!

If you kept cichlids, the higher TDS water could be perfect for them, depending on what those TDS are. If you lived in farm country and the TDS were likely to be fertilizer runoff for example, I wouldn't use it in a fish tank.

If you lived somewhere where the water filtered through limestone or the like, the higher TDS runoff would be fantastic for them.

Depends on the type of fw fish you are intending to keep. Some sensitive species like wild dDiscus, altum angels or most fish from amazon river basin(or blackwater fish) require very soft and acidic water. RoDi waste would not be soft.

She's only 9 and want's sharks so I think a few Bala's and maybe some types of tetra's. Nothing fancy really. We are on a well out in the country. Our water has natural nitrates but no chlorine or anything. It is hard water but we are going to get a softener someday soon.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't get Email notification so I assumed I got no replies.
