Rod's Onyx's - quarantine needed?

I've read that if you get tank-bred clowns from a reputable breeder, that the quarantine process can often be foregone, or at least shortened.

I emailed Rod but haven't yet received a response - do his clowns need to be quarantined? I'm hoping to get 2; but my DT needs to be fallow for another 6 weeks. Trying to decide if I should get them now and put them in quarantine, or just get them in 6 weeks and put them straight into the DT. They'll be the only fish in there.

Thanks!

Technically EVERYTHING that goes into your tank should go through quarantine (algae, rocks, inverts, corals, fish, etc). That being said, there are definitely some exceptions that many would consider a very acceptable risk. Raised fish directly from Rod would be one of those exceptions in my opinion.

just fyi, ask him how large they were... i ordered 4 and all came in very small (way to small for a display tank) and had to feed them baby brine/cyclopeze/cyclopse (sp?) and 1.5 months later, i'm still afraid they're to small for the tank.

BEAUTIFUL colors though!!

I will make sure to do that; it seem to be hard to contact him by email so will call him when I'm ready to make the purchase and will ask the size of the clowns.

thank you for the advice! That is a concern for me, even though they won't have competition for quite a bit (at minimum 2 weeks, probably more). I have other concerns with such small fish, including amount of flow; I've never dealt with really true babies!

If the tank has an overflow you will need to cover it. Why not go ahead and get them now and put them is a small tank with a sponge filter and grow them out a little? That's what I did before I put mine in the DT. All you need is filtration and a heater......

The tank is not drilled and has no overflow. Everything is HOB.

I could do that; my QT Tank currently has copper in it and my RO/DI unit goes in Sunday, so I may just wait until that is ready. I may call him and see what sizes he has and decide based on that, too.

Thanks =)

yea, forget email... call him... BUT he's working on his food business now so if you want clowns... if you call him monday, he wn't take your order unless he's shipping tuesday (i.e. he won't manage order ship dates like he used to)

still a cool guy... and wish his clowns were more plentiful!

Ah, ok. No worries, I can work with that. Thankfully I work from home, so accepting shipments is not day sensitive for me anyway. =)
