Justin - I think there was a thread about this in the SPS or one of the other forums. There were a lot posted (course my mind might be playing games on me but I am pretty sure about that). Might want to do a search on those. It might have just been built in's bit there were a lot of dividers.
My system's had a lot of issues with corals. I think because of using concrete instead of live rock. But it's been running for around a year now and has some corals that are doing okay. But the fish have been doing fine. Here's my last FTS:
Andy that looks really cool, i hope the concrete ends up working out it, for you. it is a unique look for sure. does the concrete effect eh ph or alk or something?
Thanks, Tucker. The pH was really high at first and took lots of rinsing (=whole tank freshwater filling and emptying) until that ran down. I'm not sure whether I think subsequent coral problems were from leaching substances from the concrete or whether I think it was because it took a long time for small cleaner populations to get established. Or both. I do know that a few months ago the coralline really took off and that seemed to signal a turn-around for the corals. Now if I can just avoid doing bone-headed things maybe I can get the reef established. (I walked away from the top-off water yesterday and ran the salinity down. Grr.)
Well, it'll be a bit longer than that, I'm afraid. The tank's so big that frags just get lost. Heck, all the way to the right on the very top of the rock is a pretty large Euphyllia (frogspawn). It'll be a while 'til things grow in.
BTW, there's another possibility for corals not doing well. I feed the fish pretty darn heavily. I _like_ spawning fish. Nitrates have not been an issue, but I move a lot of nutrients through the system and into algae. I'm just still working on finding the right corals that can put up with the way I do things.
So, three possible issues to work on. Maybe someday I'll get it all figured out.
I can't tell from the picture how far away that fireplace is, but if you use that fireplace, is it far enough away so that it wouldn't affect your tank temperatures?
We live in a horse barn. When we bought it there were 8 stalls down stairs & 700 sq ft apt up stairs. We converted down stairs to my wood shop, tack room, storage ect & eventually closed in 500 more sq ft in the loft, built in a 180 between original living/ktn & new living room. The photo is HDR shot
