Root-Like Growth in sump ID?

So short story, I am out of town on an internship for the next 6 months, my roommate (who also has a saltwater tank) is looking after my tank. Lucky him, 2 tanks for the price of 1.

Anyway he sent me these pictures of this growth in my sump, and I have never come across it in the forums and don't even know what to look for. It has an asterena star on it as well, but I think that is coincidence/the star is eating it.

Any help would be appreciated, I will try and answer any questions as best I can, although there may be some delay.

I can say that nothing new has been added to the tank since Mid-December. And it doesn't appear to be moving.

It just looks like a harmless sponge IMO. No worries.

Sponge. I got tons of that same stuff.

Any idea on a name? Any information on it? I searched sponges and couldn't find much that looked like it.
